The Royal And Ancient Polar Bear Society

In 1963 the Polar Bear Society fairytale started quietly and modestly. The idea was to create a unique memory for guests of Hammerfest. Today, the Polar Bear Society has close to 300 000 members!

If you join the world famous and exclusive society, you will receive the diploma with your name and signed by the Mayor of Hammerfest and the Polar Bear Pin as proof that you visited the World’s Northernmost City – Hammerfest!

Our exibition showcases our proud traditions with fishing and hunting in arctic conditions. And Polar expeditions in Hammerfest as well.


    The Polar Bear Society was founded in 1963 in Hammerfest. The polar bear is our city’s coat of arms and was therefore chosen as the society’s logo. The strength of the polar bear reflects the willpower and survival skills necessary for living in the Arctic.
