The Museum of Reconstruction for Finnmark and Northern Troms

Museum of Reconstruction

The Museum of Reconstruction for Finnmark and northern Troms stands as a monument to the human will to overcome the destructions of war and create a new future. The exhibition offers an insight into life as runaways and the rebuilding of Finnmark and Northern Troms. Here you’ll find reconstructed rooms from caves, barracks and eventually the houses the people called home. In addition the museum offers a cosy café and a pleasant souvenir store.

Did you discover the herd?

We are sure your answer is: Yes, indeed, I have seen the reindeer. Most likely that is your answer during the summer time. From May to September many thousand reindeer come to our island. They use the area as their natural summer grazing.

To learn more about the reindeer and the Sami people you should book a Sami experience with Mikkel and Solveig. The couple is your host at Mikkelgammen and will give you a lot of information about their reindeer and about their traditional life. Settle in aside of the bonfire and get enchanted by the stories they tell and the “joiking”, the traditional singing of the indigenous people of the North. Your encounter with Mikkel and Solveig will be completed by exceptional traditional food like Bidus, a typical stew with reindeer meat or dried reindeer.
